HOW TO SHOP BLACK FRIDAY SMARTLY: AVOID PRESSURE BUYING AND SAVE MONEY ON WHAT YOU ACTUALLY NEED

How To Shop The Black Friday Sales Smartly Without Losing Your Sanity (Or Your Savings)

Black Friday. That wild annual moment where the internet collectively shouts “Everything’s a bargain! Quick, buy it all!” and we all start wondering whether we suddenly need an outdoor pizza oven, a fifth set of saucepans or a massage gun we will definitely never use.

Now don’t get me wrong. I adore a good deal and I’m an Amazon girl through and through as well as an advocate of small local businesses - I love being a chameleon!

I’ve got a curated list in my Amazon store (click here 👈🏻) of the products I genuinely use, love and recommend, and many of them are on sale right now. It’s a brilliant time to pick up Christmas gifts, top up essentials and grab those items you’ve been eyeing for ages. (and yes, a few are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission to support my site if you buy - at no cost to you).

But here’s the gentle truth I tell every client, friend and family member…

Just because something is on sale doesn’t mean you need to buy it.

So this week, welcome to Bright Friday

A softer, calmer, more sensible version of Black Friday.

Less panic, more clarity.

Less “add to basket”, more “do I actually need this or am I being seduced by a yellow discount sticker?”

So let’s go through how to make this year’s shopping season feel smart, intentional and totally stress free.

Why we feel pressured to buy during Black Friday

Those big banners, countdown timers and “only 3 left!” warnings are designed to make you panic. It’s psychology, not magic. And a lot of media hype!

You are not missing out if you don’t buy something you didn’t even want an hour ago.

When you shop from intention instead of impulse, you stay in control.

No January guilt.

No packages arriving that you forgot you ordered.

No cupboards stuffed with “bargains” you never actually use.

  1. Make a list before you look

This is the “don’t go food shopping hungry” rule, but for sales.

Before you even touch the Amazon app, jot down:

• What you actually need

• Who you’re buying for at Christmas

• Which items you’ve been waiting to see reduced

• Any household bits due for replacement

Then stick to the list. Your bank balance will thank you.

  1. Think Christmas gifts now, not panic later

Black Friday is the perfect time to buy presents without paying full price in December. Future you will be delighted. Past you will be applauded for your foresight. Present you will have a little smug glow. Lovely.

If someone on your list would genuinely love a storage solution (I had to sneak that one in), a notebook, a tech upgrade or anything else you know they want that will be on sale, this is the week to tick them off.

  1. Check the returns policy before you commit

Nothing kills the buzz of a sale item like discovering it can’t be returned. Always check. Especially with third party sellers.

If you’re buying Christmas gifts, make sure the return window extends into January.

  1. Beware of “Problem disguised as a bargain” purchases

Ask yourself:

• Where will this live?

• Do I have something that already does the same job?

• Am I buying the dream or the reality?

• Will this improve my life or clutter it?

If the answer is “I don’t know”, leave it.

Your home deserves thoughtful items, not random sale strays.

  1. Give Yourself A Spending Limit

Set a budget and actually stick to it.

No “oh but it’s 60 percent off” detours.

  1. A Calmer, Happier Way To Shop This Year

Bright Friday isn’t about opting out of deals. It’s about opting out of pressure.

Use this time to also unsubscribe from emails - companies will be emailing you and if you don't want to hear from them anymore - use this moment to unsubscribe.

I have a great digital declutter course that will get you back on track and not overwhelmed with emails, photos and files - check it out here.

Shop smart. Shop intentionally. Shop for the life you actually live, not the life the algorithms think you want.

And if you do fancy browsing what I genuinely recommend and use every day, my Amazon Bright Friday List will be the perfect place to start.
